Facing the Climate Crisis

Respecting people and protecting our planet are at the core of everything we do at BRUNA. Our values are mindfully woven into every inch of our brand, running through our pulse and pushing our dream of creating exquisite, high-quality jewelry with a conscious heart forward.

We are dedicated to contributing to a better future by advocating for better practices and future-focused solutions. The heart of BRUNA has always been Fine jewelry made responsibly. While this is an all-encompassing ethos, this year, we have focused on one of the most pressing challenges we face: the climate crisis. One of the ways we do this is by donating to like-minded non-profit organizations that help those affected by the climate crisis (from animals to those in need) to NGOs working towards solutions for protecting our planet.

We are proud to confirm that once again, we are members of 1% for the Planet. Since 2020, we have committed to donating at least 1% of our gross sales to environmental, non-profit organizations that help combat some of our most important environmental issues, such as The Jane Goodall Institute in Austria and GLOBAL 2000.

We always strive to be as transparent as possible. None of this would be possible without your loving support and shared values. The following is an overview of our donations this year and their initiatives.

1% for the Planet.

Since 2020, BRUNA has been a certified member of 1% For the Planet, an initiative founded in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, the founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, the founder of Blue Ribbon Flies. Since 2020 BRUNA has donated at least 1% of gross sales (more than €162,000) to non-profit organizations working in the following four areas: Rights to Nature, Conservation & Restoration, Resilient Communities, and Just Economies.

The Causes We Support

This year we have donated more than €93,000. Below is an outline of the NGOs we have partnered with in 2022 and how our donations have helped foster positive changes. We could not have done this without you and can't wait to make more strides together.

Climate Neutral

We are very proud to say that we are Climate Neutral Certified, which is just one step toward honoring our mantra. As a Climate Neutral Certified brand, we’ve measured our carbon emissions, begun reducing them, and offset residual emissions by investing in climate crisis solutions, including the Agrocortex project in Brazil to prevent deforestation and contribute to the regeneration of Mahogany trees throughout the project area, a 186,000-hectares of safe haven for over 400 bird species and 158 tree species; the Dempsey Ridge Wind Project in the USA, to expands renewable energy production and reduce dependence on traditional electricity sources; and the Haicheng Landfill Gas Project in China, to reduce methane emissions from the Haicheng Landfill site.

Jane Goodall Institute Austria

The Jane Goodall Institute Austria (JGI Austria) is a global non-profit organization with the goal of protecting chimpanzees and other primates through holistic species conservation. Founded in 2003, JGI Austria is one of 33 JG Institutes that encourages making a difference for people, animals, and the environment we all share.

BRUNA is dedicated to building long-term partnerships where we can genuinely make an impact. We donated €46,800 in 2021 to JGI Austria, helping to protect the last wild chimpanzees, preserve their habitats, and strengthen local communities. Some of the most notable achievements which JGI Austria accomplished thanks to BRUNA's contribution include:

- 16,800 trees (e.g., avocado, mango, and cocoa) have been planted as part of a reforestation project in Masindi, Uganda, which included the participation and training of 180 farmers.

- The yearly salary of five rangers for removing approximately 400 traps in a snare removal project in Uganda has been paid.

- Medical care, food, and protection have been provided to six chimpanzees for one year at Ngamba Island, Uganda.

Our 2022 donation of €22,800 will go towards their Kibale Snare Removal Project in Uganda. The organization has already employed vets specializing in primate health and is working on the project's next steps, setting up a new field clinic.

Kindernothilfe

Founded in 1996, Kindernothilfe Austria is a non-profit aiming to give as many children as possible a better life in the world's poorest regions. Projects for sustainable development, the elimination of poverty, and humanitarian aid have been the focus of their work in more than 30 countries worldwide for more than 25 years.

This year, we donated €10,000 to support the agricultural education and training of 4,500 children and young people in Tacobamba and Sucre, Bolivia. Working with their partner NorSud, Kindernothilfe's Project 90063 aims to teach these young people and their communities about the environment, water, forests, and the climate crisis, as many of the inhabitants are malnourished, maternal and infant mortality is high, and almost 90 percent of the population in the project areas have no access to clean drinking water. The organization carries out environmental protection projects with the entire village to secure food and water supplies and counteract the climate crisis..

Caritas

Caritas' projects help people in existential emergencies in the Austrian region of Styria (such as single parents and families in crises), people suffering from hunger in the most impoverished countries, homeless children, and disaster relief from natural disasters. This year, BRUNA donated €10,000 to support the organization and its efforts to help Ukrainian refugees.

Our donation is currently being used to help refugees in arrival centers, providing a warm and comfortable transitory space and healthy food and drinks. The donation also assists Caritas' partner organizations/countries, mostly in Romania, Poland, and Hungary, where refugees find their first safe haven.

Caritas has distributed about 1 ton of food each week to people and families in need. They purchase many of the groceries (such as sugar, oil, flour, and dried goods) with the help of donations. Other projects the organization uses donations for are free German courses and childcare for mothers with children.
