Challenging and Championing a Better Jewelry Industry

Circularity

Today, a linear model of production and consumption—one in which we take materials from the planet, develop products, and dispose of them in landfills or incinerators—is no longer viable.

That’s why we’ve challenged ourselves to create a fully circular business model based on the circular economy principles of eliminating waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in use, and regenerating natural systems.

Starting from the design phase, we carefully select materials that are gentle on the environment, with a preference for recycled materials. The timeless pieces that we create are designed to accompany you for many years and to be handed on as precious heirlooms.

Your jewelry is designed to last with proper jewelry care, but we also know that the time may come when a piece needs some touches to get back to its original beauty. Together with our trusted partners at Finematter, we have launched a set of replating, repairing and refreshing services to give your beloved BRUNA jewelry pieces a new lease on life. Whether a favorite ring needs resizing, a necklace clasp is broken, or you’d simply like to add a fresh layer of gold to an 18k gold vermeil bracelet, repairs and alterations can help extend the life of your jewelry.

Learn more about our circularity services powered by Finematter here.

Lastly, ReFine presents a curated selection of pre-owned, refurbished BRUNA jewelry available for purchase, offering you responsible alternatives without compromising on quality. By shopping the BRUNA ReFine collection, you help reduce waste and promote the reuse of high-quality materials that make up our jewelry pieces.

Responsible supply chains

As a jewelry brand, we are part of a complex value chain that touches lives and communities around the world. Rooted in tradition and centuries-old practices, the jewelry industry is, from an ESG (environmental, social, governance) point of view, overdue for a positive change. We use our influence in our supply chains to promote responsible sourcing and production practices that are respectful of the people and the planet.

Our jewels are crafted with care in Italy and Thailand. Here, long traditions of fine craftsmanship have been handed down from generation to generation and bolstered with cutting-edge technologies. Learn more about our jewelry production here.

We expect our business partners to uphold our commitments, as defined in our ESG Policy, Human Rights Policy, and Responsible Supply Chains Policy.

For this reason, we only work with suppliers who can demonstrate that they meet our Code of Conduct for Business Partners and Materials Standard.

Value creation for local communities

The jewelry industry relies heavily on raw materials, including precious metals and gemstones, that are sourced from communities in developing and emerging economies. Artisanal or small-scale gold mining, for instance, plays a significant role in the global gold supply chain and provides millions of individuals with a vital source of income.

However, due to the lack of access to formal financing and fair prices, these miners often struggle to break free from the poverty cycle, which makes supporting their communities all the more critical. At BRUNA, we support artisanal gold mining communities through our partnership with The Impact Facility (TIF), a social enterprise committed to transforming mineral wealth into community prosperity, through funding (learn more about our philanthropic partnership here) and expertise. In May 2024, we joined TIF’s Responsible Gold Credit Working Group, a group of committed brands working together to enable responsible sourcing engagement with artisanal and small-scale gold mining communities. We helped build a Responsible Gold Credits Programme, which aims to provide artisanal miners with the investment needed to finance progressive improvement across impact areas such as governance, health and safety, environmental protection, mercury eradication, and inclusive economic development; while providing downstream brands with an opportunity to support artisanal miners, without the challenges of physical integration and supply chain disruptions.

We have integrated our commitment to supporting artisanal gold mining communities into our sourcing strategy for “ethical precious metals.” Our definition of ethical precious metals encompasses the following sources for silver and gold. As we’ve done in the past, we’ll continue to prioritize recycled precious metals from verified, reputable providers. Additionally, we're opening our doors to responsibly sourced, artisanally-mined gold, with potential future partnerships with organizations like The Impact Facility (TIF), Fairtrade, or Fairmined. In case any gold we source does not fall into the first two categories, we’ll invest in the purchase of an equivalent amount of Responsible Mineral Credits through TIF’s Responsible Gold Credit Programme.

We've learned that by engaging with artisanal miners and supporting initiatives like TIF, we can play a small but vital role in improving working conditions, protecting the environment, and promoting fair trade. By investing in the well-being of those who contribute to or are impacted by the industry, we can ensure that the jewelry sector becomes a source of dignified work for all.
